Muchas veces cuando conozco nuevas personas me preguntan de dónde soy y muchas veces cuando les digo Ecuador, lo que saben acerca de mi país es solamente lo que han leído en las noticias o Galápagos, pero mi país al igual que muchos países en latino América, han sido eliminados de la lista para viajar de turistas, gracias a las malas noticias o películas donde solamente se muestra la parte  más peligrosa  o noticias negativas de los carteles, pero Latinoamérica es mucho más que lo que a veces dice la prensa amarilla.  La realidad es que al igual que en la mayoría de las ciudades grandes hay partes buenas y malas, que mientras sepas a dónde ir, puedes disfrutar de lugares maravillosos. ¡No creas todo lo que ves en las películas! La mayoría de gente no son vendedores de drogas, la mayoría de gente es trabajadora, actualmente hay un alto número de gente profesional y las ciudades principales son modernas, con rascacielos hermosos, con un clima envidiable. 

Por ejemplo en Quito, mi ciudad, tenemos 70 Grados Fahrenheit de temperatura promedio todo el año y si viajas al oeste a dos horas cambia todo y tienes el bosque nublado con animales únicos, como en Mindo donde hay una de las exposiciones de mariposas más grandes del mundo y  puedes encontrar 4000 tipos de orquídeas! Al sur a más o menos dos horas tienes el Cotopaxi, uno de los volcanes con nieve más grandes del mundo.

Si viajas al oeste tenemos la Amazonía donde encontrarás monos y todo tipo de vida selvática y claro no podemos olvidar las Islas Galápagos con  tortugas gigantes! 

Es verdad, en Latinoamérica, Sí se necesita hablar español y prepararse antes de viajar es importante, al menos tener un curso para viajeros con el vocabulario básico como ¿Dónde está el baño? ¿Una cerveza por favor?… Puesto que ahí casi nadie habla inglés, convirtiéndose en una excelente oportunidad para practicar tu nuevo idioma.  

Si eres arriesgado puedes viajar solo, aunque te recomendamos ir con gente nativa o guías reconocidos que te lleven a los lugares más tradicionales y así realmente conozcas la cultura.  

No te recomendamos manejar, la mayoría de los carros son manuales y si no te sientes cómodo manejando no será nada fácil hacerlo en las montañas con grandes pendientes y tráfico. Lo más fácil es contratar transporte privado que te lleven sin preocupaciones disfrutando de la ciudad y sus alrededores. 

En cuanto a la comida Latino América cuenta con una variedad gigantesca de platos típicos únicos de cada región, por lo que te recomiendo probarlos siempre que tengas la oportunidad, la sazón es rica con productos que crecen en cada lugar, por ejemplo un plato típico popular de mi ciudad se llama “Chugchucara” y cuenta con varios tipos de maíz debido a que es un plato de las montañas donde hay muchas variedades como en este plato el mote, tostado, choclo o elote, canguil o palomitas, etc.

El valor de los bienes raíces varía de país a país, por ejemplo en Ecuador se usa el dólar y las casas cuestan similarmente a Louisville, Ky, pero si vas a Buenos Aires, las casas son mucho más baratas debido al cambio de moneda.  

En general, costo de tomar vacaciones en Latinoamérica es más bajo que en Europa gracias al valor del cambio de moneda y al costo general de la comida y servicios. 

La única excepción es España, puesto que, este país si ofrece una gran variedad de comida y servicios a un precio en general más económico que otros países en Europa.

Vacations in Latin America or Europe?

When I meet new people and they ask me where I am from, and when I tell them Ecuador, many times all that they know about Ecuador is only what they have read in the news or about the Galapagos.  Ecuador, like many countries in Latin America, has been eliminated from the tourist lists due to bad news or movies where only the most dangerous parts or negative information is shown.  Latin America is much more than what the press sometimes says. The reality is that, like most large cities, there are good and bad parts.  As long as you know where to go you can enjoy wonderful places. Don’t believe everything you see in the movies.  The majority of people are hard workers.  Currently, there is a high number of professional people and the main cities are modern, with beautiful skyscrapers, and Ecuador and many other places have an enviable climate.  For example in my city, Quito, we have an average temperature of 70° all year round.  If you travel north two hours from Quito everything changes and you have the cloud forest with unique animals.  In Mindo, there is one of the largest butterfly exhibitions in the world, and to the south about two hours you have Cotopaxi, one of the largest volcanoes with snow in the world.  If you travel to the west we have the Amazon where you will find monkeys and all kinds of jungle life.  Of course we cannot forget the Galapagos Islands with giant tortoises!

It is true, in Latin America it helps to speak some Spanish before traveling there or at least have a course for travelers with basic vocabulary such as Where is the bathroom? A beer please?… Since many people do not speak English, this makes an excellent opportunity to practice your new language. If you are independent, you can travel alone.  We recommend going with native people or recognized guides who can take you to the most special places so you can really get to know the culture.  We do not recommend driving, as most cars are manual and if you do not feel comfortable driving it will not be easy to drive in the mountains with steep slopes and traffic. We recommend you hire private transportation that will take you worry-free while enjoying the city and its surroundings.

As for food, Latin America has a tremendous variety of typical dishes unique to each region.  I would recommend trying them whenever you have the opportunity, the seasoning is rich from products that grow in each place.  There is a popular typical dish in Quito named “Chugchucara” and it has several types of corn because it is a dish from the mountains where there are many varieties such as mote, toasted, choclo, elote, canguil or palomitas, etc.

In general, the cost of taking a vacation in Latin America is lower than in Europe thanks to the value of the currency exchange and the general cost of food and services.

The value of real estate varies from country to country, for example in Ecuador, the dollar is used and houses are a similar cost to Louisville, Ky, but if you go to Buenos Aires, houses are much less expensive due to the currency exchange.

The major exception is Spain, with a wide variety of food and services at a lower price than other countries in Europe, but much more expensive than Latin America.
