¿Cualquier persona puede aprender un Segundo idioma?

Ayer me reuní a cenar con una amiga de Suecia y su esposo de Bélgica y me comentaba que sus niños de 5 años y 8 años hablan fluidamente Inglés, Sueco, Belga y que quieren aprender ahora Español!
Entonces yo le pregunté ¿por qué en Europa el ciudadano promedio habla al menos 3 idiomas? ¿Cuál es su secreto? Y ella confirmó algo que he estudiado durante muchos años y que estoy cien por ciento de acuerdo “No hay ningún secreto, todos podemos aprender más de un idioma, lo que se necesita es perseverancia, consistencia y no temer a hacer errores”. Después de aprender un Segundo idioma se hace mucho más fácil el aprender un tercero o cuarto idioma, debido a que la mayoría de las lenguas tienen las mismas raíces como el latín o el alemán.

Si deseas aprender una segunda lengua lo más importante es el tomar la decisión seria de que lo vas a hacer y no parar hasta lograrlo. Por experiencia sé que hay momentos en que uno dice “no puedo” “es muy difícil” pero en realidad ese es el momento en que te encuentras más cerca a la meta, nadie se levanta hablando un Segundo idioma, toma mucho tiempo hasta que poco a poco empiezas reconociendo palabras, después entendiendo a una u otra persona y poco a poco se va mejorando. El aprender otro idioma no es una ciencia sino es más como un deporte, si quieres tener músculos puedes obtenerlos siempre y cuando entrenes cada día un poquito, por tanto, no es realmente imposible, la pregunta es ¿tienes la determinación para dedicarle unos minutos cada día para practicar tu nuevo idioma?

Esa es la ventaja en Europa, nadie tiene otra opción, al tener los países tan cercanos hablando diferentes lenguas siempre tienen la exposición al escuchar a otras personas, en las escuelas es normal aprender más idiomas, tratan aunque se equivoquen de hablar con quienes estén a su

alrededor, es su cultura de no tener miedo a cometer errores, todos nos equivocamos y no hay ningún problema si pronunciamos mal, cuando nos corrigen es la mejor manera para pulir nuestra pronunciación o mejorar el vocabulario.

Muchas veces es nuestro propio ego el que no nos permite aprender, ya que pensamos que vamos a aprender a la primera, y como mencioné antes aprender un idioma depende del tiempo que le dediques a aprender más, no como hacer Matemáticas o Ciencias que hay una fórmula a seguir.

Está bien si empiezas con un app como Duolingo o Babel, etc. que te de recordatorios para estudiar cada día unos 15 minutos, pero, aunque ayude esto no es suficiente, si puedes aumentar el escuchar música o ver películas en español puede ser de mucha ayuda, especialmente para mejorar tu audición, ya que esto solamente lo puedes hacer tú. Para aprender a hablar es diferente, necesitarás un maestro que te corrija la pronunciación, que interactúe contigo, que te dirija y si pones todos estos ingredientes juntos ¡Voila! ¡Lo lograste!

Lo increíble de aprender un segundo idioma es que es igual a aprender a cocinar, ya tienes la receta para seguir con cualquier otro idioma, pero ya el tercer idioma te va a hacer más fácil porque ya no tienes falsas expectativas, eres más paciente y muchas palabras se parecen, además si sabes conjugar en un idioma aprenderás que hay mucha similaridad con otros.

Eso lo constaté este verano con mi niño de 11 años, que habla Inglés y Español, pero empezó a estudiar Griego hace un año, porque le pareció divertido, nosotros no teníamos la expectativa de que hablara fluido sino como un hobbie, pero al ir de vacaciones a Grecia en Julio pasado, la guía empezó a conversar en griego con mi niño y no lo podía creer, es impactante lo que se puede lograr si uno solo trata.

Durante casi 20 años de experiencia enseñando idiomas he visto a personas de todas las edades aprender Español, uno de mis favoritos es Don Roberto! Quien la primera vez que lo conocí me dijo: sé que no podré aprender porque tengo más de 70 años y eso es muy tarde para empezar, pero mi sueño es jubilarme en Cuenca- Ecuador, y yo le dije: ¡sí puedes! Quieres realmente aprenderlo? ¡Y me dijo sí! ¡¡Así el aprendió y ahora vive ahí!! ¡Yo soy tan feliz cuando me manda sus fotos!!

Can anyone learn a second language?

Yesterday, I met for dinner with a friend from Italy and her husband from Amsterdam. She told me that her children, ages 5 and 10, speak fluent English, Italian and Dutch, and now want to learn Spanish!
So, I asked him why in Europe the average citizen speaks at least 3 languages? What is the secret? And he confirmed something that I have studied for many years and that I agree with one hundred percent: “There is no secret, we can all learn more than one language, what is needed is perseverance, consistency and not being afraid to make mistakes.” Nowadays, after learning a second language, it becomes much easier to learn a third or fourth language, because most languages have the same roots in Latin or German.

If you want to learn a second language, the most important thing is to make the serious decision that you are going to do it and not stop until you achieve it. From experience I know that there are times when one says “I can’t” “it’s too difficult” but currently that is the moment when

you are closest to the goal. No one wakes up speaking a second language, it takes a long time and little by little you start recognizing words, then understanding one person or another until slowly you improve. Learning another language is not a science but more like a sport. If you want to have muscles, you can get them as long as you train them every day. Therefore, it is not impossible. The answer lies in if you have the determination to dedicate a few minutes each day to practice your new language?

That is the advantage in Europe, having countries so close to each other that speak different languages, they always have exposure to listening to other people. In schools it is normal to teach many languages. Even if they make mistakes, people try to talk to those who are close to them. Their culture is not being afraid to make mistakes. We all make mistakes and there is no problem if we pronounce words wrong. When others correct them, it is the best way to polish our pronunciation and improve our vocabulary.

Many times it is our own ego that does not allow us to learn. We believe that we are going to learn the first time we try, and as I mentioned before, learning a language takes the time you dedicate to learning. It is not like doing Math or Science, where there is a formula to follow.

It’s fine if you start with an app like Duolingo or Babel, etc. that gives you reminders to study for about 15 minutes every day. Even if the app helps this is not enough time. If you can increase listening to music or watching movies in Spanish it can be very helpful, especially to improve your hearing, since only you can do this. To learn to speak is different, you will need a teacher to correct your pronunciation, to interact with you, to direct you and if you put all these ingredients together, Voila! You did it! The incredible thing about learning a second language is that it is the same as learning to cook; you already have the recipe to continue with any other language, but the third language will be easier for you because

you no longer have false expectations, you will be more patient. Many words will be similar, and if you know how to conjugate you will learn that there are many similarities with other languages.

I confirmed this process over the summer with my 11-year-old boy, who speaks English and Spanish. He started studying Greek a year ago, because he thought it was fun! We did not have the expectation since it is his hobby, but when going on vacation to Greece last July, the guide started conversing in Greek with him and I couldn’t believe it! It’s amazing what can be achieved if you just try.

During almost 20 years of experience teaching languages I have seen people of all ages learn Spanish. One of my favorite student successes is Don Roberto! The first time I met him he told me, “I know I won’t be able to learn because I’m over 70 years old and it is too late to start, but my dream is to retire in Cuenca-Ecuador.” I told him: yes you can! Do you really want to learn it? And he said yes! That’s how he started and now he lives there!! I am so happy when he sends me photos enjoying the amazing weather!!
